Although Abraham Lincoln sometimes chastised his wife for her extravagant spending (and he didn't know the half of it, for Mary managed to accumulate a huge debt from her shopping sprees in New York and Philadelphia during her years in the White House) he seemed to appreciate Mary's efforts in dressing the part of the First Lady. Once at a reception he said that "my wife is as handsome as when she was a girl and I, a poor nobody then, fell in love with her and...have never fallen out."
