If I had to guess, I'd say that if she could always dress as she pleases without deference to official duties, she would prefer a mix of casual and trendy.

Michelle Obama often appears in pants and a casual top along with a cardigan for events such as this one pictured when she visited an elementary school and talked to students who were interested in the White House vegetable garden project.
