There's never a need to wear a trendy fashion color just because it's trendy. The primary concern should be whether or not the color looks great on its wearer.
Even so, sometimes it's difficult to find flattering colors when retailers are selling clothing in the trendy colors of the season. If you decide to go with a color that's not your best, keep it away from your face or wear it as an accessory--perhaps a handbag or shoes, rather than jewelry. That way you can be trendy and wear a more flattering color close to your face.
